1. Tarn Hows

Distance: Approximately 3.2 km (2 miles)

Time: Around 1–1.5 hours at a leisurely pace

Highlights: We recommend this walk to everyone. It’s pram-friendly and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area.

Tarn Hows offers a scenic and accessible circular walk suitable for all ages and abilities. The well-maintained path leads around a picturesque tarn, framed by woodland and views of the Langdale Pikes and Helvellyn range. This tranquil route is a favourite for photographers and nature lovers, with chances to spot Belted Galloway cattle and native wildlife along the way. If you would like to make it a little more challenging, you can extend it to Black Crag.

2. Orrest Head

Distance: Approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles)

Time: About 20-30 minutes to the summit

Highlights: We love this walk for its panoramic views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells. Starting near the Windermere Hotel, the path winds gently through Elleray Wood.

While there are some steeper sections, a wheelchair-accessible route is available. The summit provides 360-degree views, including notable landmarks like Scafell Pike and the Old Man of Coniston14.

3. Gummers How

Distance: About 2.1 km (1.3 miles)

Time: Approximately 1 hour

Highlights: Located at the southern end of Windermere, this walk starts from a picnic area, making it easier as much of the ascent is already covered. The trail is well-marked and leads to a viewpoint offering breathtaking views over Lake Windermere and Newby Bridge. While there are some rocky steps, the overall difficulty remains low, making it suitable for families.

4. Queen Adelaide’s Hill Circular

Distance: 5.1 km (3.2 miles)

Time: Around 1 hour 25 minutes

Highlights: This circular route begins at Fell Foot Car Park and offers a leisurely stroll along the banks of Lake Windermere. The path is relatively flat and suitable for all ages, with opportunities to enjoy refreshments at local spots like the Fell Foot Ice Cream Parlour along the way. This walk combines beautiful lakeside views with a gentle terrain.
