Hi there, I’m Tony. Welcome to mine and Ed’s guide to the Lake District. I’ve been visiting this stunning part of the world for over 50 years, and for the last 7, I’ve been lucky enough to call it home. We say it almost every day, but there is no place like Windermere.
Myself and Ed know the area like the back of our hands, and wanted to share some of our top things to do, as recommended by locals. We often get people visiting us for a wakesurfing session and asking where they can grab a nice bite to eat or go on a walk, so here it is. But first, a little bit about us.
The Faces Behind Windermere Wakesurfing
Over the decades, I’ve experienced the Lakes in all its glory – from peaceful mornings on the water to unforgettable adventures in the fells – and it’s safe to say it’s a place that truly gets under your skin (or should I say wetsuit).
Back in the day, I used to water ski on Windermere when it was still allowed – what an experience that was!

In March 2000, the Lake District National Park Authority introduced a bylaw imposing a 10-knot speed limit for all powered craft on Windermere, officially enforced from March 29, 2005, after a five-year transition period (1). While this marked the end of high-speed watersports like water skiing, it opened the door to new, innovative ways to enjoy the lake – Wakesurfing. Wakesurfing is one of the few watersports that thrives within the 10-knot limit. The boat creates an endless wave, making the fun last for hours.
Alongside my partner Ed, I run Windermere Wakesurfing, where we welcome everyone—from first-timers to world-class surfers—to experience the thrill of wakesurfing on this incredible lake. The best part? You can enjoy the rush of riding the wake while staying safely within the speed limit. It’s an exhilarating and accessible adventure we’re passionate about sharing with others. Take a look at Ed in action and see for yourself.
In this guide, Ed and I wanted to share our top things to do in the Lake District. Whether you’re here for family-friendly activities, lake district walks, or watersports on the lake, you’ll find something for you. We hope this guide helps you make the most of your time in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Let’s go!

3. Our Favourite Places to Eat Near Lake Windermere
When we’re not out on the water, we’re usually talking about where we’re going to eat next—and luckily, Windermere’s got no shortage of great spots. Whether it’s a post-surf pint, a lazy brunch, or a proper roast with the family, there’s something for every kind of mood. These are a few of our personal favourites—places we go back to time and again, and happily recommend to anyone visiting the area.
The Marina View Bar (Formerly The Boathouse)

We’ve spent many afternoons here after a surf on the lake, relaxing with a nice beverage and a bite to eat. Right on the Windermere Marina, the Marina View Bar serves up delicious food with stunning views. Whether you’re stopping in for a coffee or settling in for a hearty meal, this is one place we always recommend.
Explore the Marina View Bar website.
Homeground

Our favourite place to go for breakfast or brunch. If you’re after exceptional coffee and a laid-back atmosphere, Homeground is the place to be. It’s a favourite among locals and visitors alike, and once you’ve tried their brunch, you’ll see why.
Top tip: You might want to keep in mind that they don’t take bookings, so on busy days (such as weekends) people will often have to queue to get a table.
Base Pizza Place

If you’re after pizza, I can confidently say that Base Pizza is a must. The toppings are always fresh, and the pizzas are cooked to perfection. The whole place has a great, laid-back feel. Whether you’re grabbing a takeaway or sitting in with friends, it never disappoints.
Explore Base Pizza’s menu and get your taste buds tingling.
Heft High Newton

Heft is one of my favourite places to eat—there’s just something special about it. The food is thoughtful and creative without being over the top, and the whole place has this cosy, welcoming feel that makes you want to settle in and stay a while.
Visit Heft High Newton’s website.
Hooked Fresh Fish and Seafood Restaurant

Hooked is one of my go-to spots in Windermere—mainly because I’ll find any excuse to eat their seafood. It’s always incredibly fresh, cooked just right, and somehow makes me feel like I’m on holiday (even if it’s raining sideways outside).
Take a look at the Hooked website.
Urban Food House

Urban Food House in Bowness is part of the same crew as Hooked, and it’s just as good—just with more brunch and fewer fish. The vibe is chilled, the food’s full of flavour, and the pancakes? Genuinely hard to share.
Visit the Urban Food House Website.
Wild Boar Estate

The Wild Boar near Windermere is one of those places that just gets it right—cosy, rustic, and full of proper, comforting food. The smokehouse dishes are great after a walk in the woods or a day on the lake. There’s plenty to look at, too, if you want to get a true experience of the finest the Lake District has to offer.
Visit the Wild Boar Estate website.
Mizumi

Mizumi at the Lakes Hotel is my go-to when I’m in the mood for great Japanese food with a stunning view. The sushi is always fresh, and the whole place has a relaxed yet sophisticated vibe. Perfect for a special meal without feeling stuffy.
The Brown Horse Inn

The Brown Horse Inn is a family favourite of ours, especially for a Sunday roast. The food is always great, and the laid-back vibe makes it perfect for a relaxed meal with the family. Plus, the kids love the play area, and we love the terrace when the weather’s good. You can also stay overnight at their hotel or in one of their glamping pods.

Gilpin Spice

And last but by no means least, Gilpin Spice. Gilpin Spice at the Gilpin Hotel is one of those places we love for a delicious meal. It’s perfect for a special night out without being too formal. Would be the perfect place to eat after a private charter on our boat.
