There’s a brilliant atmosphere around the lake during the summer months, especially when some of the big on-water events roll into town. For anyone planning a Lake District trip in 2026, here are some of the biggest and best events happening on Windermere this summer.
Wakesurf Windermere & MasterCraft Action (30th–31st May 2026)

For watersports fans, this has got to be one of the best weekends of the summer on Windermere.
Wakesurf Windermere 2026 is back at Windermere Marina Village and shaping up to be another huge weekend on the lake. Expect pro riders, the latest MasterCraft boats, on-water demos, live music, food, plenty happening around the marina, and a brilliant atmosphere from start to finish.
One of the best things about the event is that it’s not just for experienced riders either. Many people come along simply to watch, meet other watersports fans, and soak up the atmosphere around the marina.
If you’ve never watched wakesurfing up close before, it’s well worth adding to your Lake District plans. Early mornings on the lake, calm water, mountain views in every direction, and plenty happening around the marina all weekend, it’s a brilliant way to kick off summer on Windermere.
The team at Windermere Wakesurfing are proud to use MasterCraft boats throughout the season out on the lake. Built specifically for wakesurfing, they’re a huge part of what makes the experience on Windermere so good.
Top tip: Book in for some top-notch food and drinks at the Marina View Bar to really make the most of the day.
Great North Swim (12th–14th June 2026)

The Great North Swim has become one of the biggest outdoor swimming events in the UK, and honestly, the atmosphere it brings to Windermere is fantastic.
Thousands of swimmers head to the lake each year to take part, whether they’re doing a short-distance challenge or tackling one of the longer endurance swims. Around Bowness and Brockhole, the whole place gets a real buzz about it, loads of spectators, lakeside food stalls, live commentary, and a proper summer event feel.
Even for those not taking part, it’s a brilliant weekend to be around the lake. Visitors can spend the morning watching swimmers head out across the water and the afternoon exploring the area or getting out on the lake themselves.
These events are always really well organised too, with safety crews, support boats, and water monitoring all playing a big role throughout the weekend.
Windermere Triathlons & Duathlons (4th–5th July 2026)

If you like your outdoor events a bit more full-on, the Windermere Triathlons & Duathlons are always impressive to watch.
Athletes swim in the lake before heading straight into some seriously tough cycling and running routes around the Lake District. The scenery might be stunning, but some of those hills are no joke.
For visitors, though, it creates a great atmosphere around Windermere. Cafés are packed, the lakeside gets busy, and there’s a real sense that everyone’s outside making the most of summer.
And that’s the best thing about visiting the Lakes during event season, there’s always something going on. Plenty of people who come here for one of these events end up trying something completely new while they’re visiting too, whether that’s paddleboarding, kayaking, or hopping on a wakesurf board for the first time.
Epic Lakes Swim Windermere (9th August 2026)

The Epic Lakes Swim Windermere takes place from Borrans Park in Waterhead, Ambleside and is one of the standout open-water swimming events of the summer. Swimmers can choose from distances including 750m, 1500m, 3k, and 5k, making it a brilliant event for both experienced swimmers and people looking to challenge themselves for the first time.
What’s great about this one is that it feels really welcoming. It’s competitive enough for serious swimmers, but still relaxed enough for families and supporters to enjoy the day around the lake.
And honestly, there aren’t many better places to spend a summer weekend than Windermere in August when the lake’s full of activity and everyone’s outdoors making the most of it.
Chillswim Windermere End-to-End (5th September 2026)

Now this one is seriously impressive.
The Chillswim Windermere End-to-End sees swimmers take on the full 11-mile length of Windermere. Anyone who’s stood by the lake and looked into the distance will know just how far that actually is.
Taking place on Saturday 5th September 2026, it’s one of the most iconic open-water swims in the country and brings a lot of experienced swimmers to the area each year. Watching people complete it is genuinely inspiring.
What really stands out with these events is how much planning and support goes into them. From safety boats to organised support teams, everything’s designed to help people enjoy the lake responsibly while taking on an incredible challenge.
Enjoying Windermere Responsibly

Like anywhere that attracts lots of visitors during summer, there’s always a big focus on helping people enjoy Windermere responsibly and safely.
Local businesses, event organisers, and watersports providers all work hard throughout the season to make sure visitors can enjoy the lake while respecting the environment and staying informed about conditions on the water.
For the team at Windermere Wakesurfing, guest safety is always the priority. We’re out on the lake pretty much every day through summer, helping visitors enjoy everything that makes Windermere such a memorable place to spend time outdoors.
